DO WE NEED A LURCH TO THE RIGHT (BRAIN)?

DO WE NEED A LURCH TO THE RIGHT (BRAIN)?

DO WE NEED A LURCH TO THE RIGHT (BRAIN)?

In a world dominated by left-brain thinkers where will those breakthrough ideas, needed to unlock progress on the scale we need come from? I am talking ‘big’ here. Not the slow drip of incremental change.

Our approach to education has overwhelmingly fed and rewarded left-brain thinkers. That has brought us overburdening bureaucracy and slowed progress.

The truth is that most earth shifting successes come from educational outliers or distracted creatives.

Take these examples.

Colour sees off crime

Albanian Prime Minister #EdiRama, an artist, who as #mayor of #Tirana painted the city in a pallette of bright colours, planted 15,000 trees and cleaned up civic spaces. He didn’t just win citizen’s’ hearts, there was a sharp reduction in crime. He was also first to create a cabinet with twice as many women as men.

A revered eco city.

When #JaimeLerner, an architect became mayor of #Brazilian city, #Curitiba, he set out on his mission – A city designed for people. He achieved a radical transformation using a lateral thinking approach. With slum dwellers, he offered food and football tickets in exchange for their waste. He then trained them in building skills so that they could build themselves new homes. 64% of those poorest are now involved in the lucrative construction sector. He pedestrianised a street in 48 hours to create momentum – against the advice of his operations dept.

What about the transformation of #Finland’s health – from least to most healthy? Cholesterol measuring competitions between neighbourhoods, dairy farms turned into berry growing fields and pensioner playgrounds.

Political leadership is overwhelmingly left-brained. We even use the term ‘safe pair of hands’ the most deflating description of a leader one can imagine.

Leading from the streets

The latest leader to tick the right brain box is #Ukraine’s #presidentzelensky , a comedian and TV producer. He talks not from a war room but from the streets. He makes emotional connections with his citizens, refers to Russian soldiers as victims and welcomes their surrender. 90% current approval ratings speak volumes.

Do you think we need more right brained leaders?
