Since my early 20s I have made a habit of speaking to strangers – at least five a day. If this sounds bizarre, let me explain. I have never easily settled into a group of like-minds. While others were out with the lads, I would wander into strange bars and engage people in chat – I still do. Bus stops, Tube trains, Cafés, shops or on the street offer rich pickings.
Why?
Because I learn so, so much.
I am fascinated by the experiences and perspectives of others. People who don’t sound or look like me. From India to Beirut, and New York to Newquay, I have asked and listened.
As a motivational speaker, I need to speak to everyone. Not just a few. I need also to be culturally literate. It matters that I embrace their lives. Empathy must be practised and honed, and you will never persuade a fixed mind unless you understand its roots and influences and speak in recognisable tongues.
My secret ingredient? That’s it.
